Denbigh Asylum was designed by architect Thomas Fulljames to accommodate between 60 and 200 patients. The hospital originally had its own farm and gasworks. Planned for closure during the 1960s, it was closed in sections from 1991 to 1995.
In November 2008, during work to renovate the building site and covert it to apartments and residential properties, the building caught fire; it was later confirmed that the main hall of the hospital was destroyed – Arson was suspected.
It’s currently on the buildings at risk register. In 2011, the building was at risk of collapsing and no action was taken by the owners after an urgent works notice was issued, Denbighshire Council had no choice but to carry out repairs on the building which cost close to £1m.

What a shame to see such a building fall into disrepair. Whenever I see old buildings in ruin I think what amazing studios & places to stay they would make when there are so many homeless folk and it makes me even sadder.

It is a shame, its beautiful. They are planning to turn it into flats and apartments, they have planning permission in, but it’s going to take a lot of time and money as its Grade II listed!
